This server primarily provides a high performance on-line (world-wide) SECURE BACKUP-SERVICE named ictp_restic for institutional devices (laptops). It can also be used as a PERSONAL DATA SAFE/VAULT by anyone with an ICTP account. This server is not to be used as a repositiory for scientific or other BIG data but it is meant for safeguarding both institutional data and your personal and sensitive documents, letters, etc.
PRIMARY BACKUP SERVICE: ictp_restic
This server provides the client installation tools and instructions for setting up the fast, secure and on-line back of institutional laptop devices, any-time, anywhere and over INTERNET.
The installation of the ictp_restic service MUST be performed by an authorised IT staff (or designated backup administrator) using the procedure documented in the appropriate page (listed below) and must be carried out as the Super User(root on MacOS/Linux or Administrator on Windows) of the client (laptop) device. During the installation of a client device, the user-name and password of an authorized backup admin (IT staff) is always verified.
Authorised IT staff (or designated backup administrators) can begin by clicking an operating system family of the client (laptop) device to be backedup to obtain the installer and instatllation instructions:
ictp_restic is a command-line backup solution designed to be simple, fast and always working in the background to provide continous data protection. By default, files larger than 2GB, videos files, iso files, virtualization files, system files and folders for online drives (Nextcloud, GDrive, OneDrive, etc) are NOT BACKED UP.
After installation, the user of the laptop device may open a terminal or cmd window to perform self-service tasks such as checking status of backups, restoring files, etc. Please see the usage guide for more information (and examples) about the available self-service tasks.
SECONDARY SERVICE: PERSONAL DATA SAFE/VAULT(s):
The server may be used as an anytime, anywhere self-service data safe/vault(s) by anyone with a valid ICTP account.
A data vault is completely under the control of the requesting user as as it is encrypted using a password of your choice which ensures that IT staff are not able to access any data placed in the vault.
Each data vault is protected by its own password however, the total number and sizes of vaults that can be created by each person is limited.
Changing the restic password (amounts to re-initialization) of an existing data vault will invalidate and destroy all its existing contents.
